Mulder 122 Yacht Evolves a Successful Series for How Owners Cruise Today

Nearly 90 years after its founding as a metal and carpentry shop, the family-owned Mulder Shipyard continues to make inroads into superyachts. The Mulder 122 yacht remains a modest size, but she combines bigger thinking as well as subtle design progressions based on the builder’s own success and what buyers increasingly want.

As her name suggests, the Mulder 122 is 122 feet (37 meters) in length. This makes her just slightly longer than the Mulder ThirtySix series, which was the starting point. It was the starting point for good reason, too. That series led to nine deliveries, including Delta One, Calypso I, and the yacht Q43, commissioned by an American couple.

Those familiar with both the Mulder ThirtySix and other Mulder projects will recognize the 122’s styling. It’s neither too traditional nor too modern, to ensure more lasting appeal. Still, there are differences. They’re certainly noticeable forward. Aboard the Mulder ThirtySix, the foredeck featured a sunpad and a big skylight, the latter amplifying the spacious feeling of the master suite. In a change of pace reflective of owners’ and guests’ preferences, the 122 provides extra ways to spend time together. Specifically, an ample U-shaped lounge welcomes everyone for sightseeing or sundowners (or both). It’s easy to imagine it becoming a favorite area aboard. It’s also in proximity to a huge sunpad and yet another seating area, cozier and tucked into the bow.

Further prominent differences are aft. The Mulder 122 yacht offers more space for enjoying time at anchor, through a design that encourages spending more time closer to the water. For instance, the swim platform is deeper. This is in keeping with what many builders and designers consider a terrace on the sea. Adding length to the swim platform simultaneously led to reconfiguring the twin stairs leading from the main aft deck. They flow more naturally between the two spaces, and according to Mulder they’re less steep and easier to use.

Still aft, since cruisers can’t get enough of watertoys, the Mulder 122 tender garage welcomes more options than the Mulder ThirtySix. Not only can a 20’6” (6.25-meter) tender stow inside, but so, too, can kayaks, SeaBobs, dive gear, and more. It’s teak-lined as well.

Remaining an all-aluminum semi-custom series, the Mulder 122 should cruise at 15 knots. IMO Tier IV-compliant engines are available on request.
