Wicked weather has struck several portions of the United States over the month of December so far, leaving some families without electricity for days (or weeks) and leaving others without a home at all.
The people at Westport Shipyard know all too well what Mother Nature can do. A storm that hit the Pacific Northwest on December 2 sent massive rainfall/snowfall and raging floods through areas near its facilities in Westport, Hoquiam, and Port Angeles, Washington. So the megayacht builder decided to turn its annual food drive into a fundraiser and food collection for local charities.
As a result, the employees donated nearly 13,750 pounds of food to regional food banks. And because Westport promised to contribute one dollar for every pound of food up to 12,000 pounds, that resulted in an even bigger early Christmas present for families in need.
But that’s not all. Westport contributed $15,000 to the United Way of Grays Harbor and $20,000 to the American Red Cross storm relief funds.
Darryl Wakefield, president of Westport, put it this way: “We’ve seen the generous outpouring of support from our friends and neighbors, and we want to do our part to help restore order to the lives of those affected. We want to help everyone in the community join in the holiday spirit.”
