Imagine having a garden growing inside your yacht, “fed” by plentiful light streaming in through glass walls. Imagine also having solar panels providing much of the power for your onboard needs.
These and more innovative ideas are from the mind’s eye of Michał Górzyński and the Sunreef Design Team, brought together in the Sunreef One Fifty. While this 45.89-meter (150’5”) megayacht may still be a concept project, the year of research that has gone into her has convinced the yard that the One Fifty is the best alternative, aesthetically and functionally, for any buyer interested in owning a catamaran.
The aesthetic differences are evident right away. Besides boasting a thoroughly modern profile, the One Fifty also has a forward cockpit ideal for sunning or dining plus a full-beam deckhouse. Don’t take the deckhouse design to mean that there’s no side-deck access for the nine crewmembers, however – clever sloping decks allow them to move from the aft deck all the way to the nav station. And they can feel secure doing so even without handrails outboard. That’s right, the One Fifty doesn’t have a single rail. Instead, the Sunreef team uses a combination of the sloping decks and the structure of the deckhouse to make different levels.
Also because of the unusual deckhouse design, the interior gains plentiful usable space for the owner and guests. In fact, all six staterooms for the yacht’s 12 passengers can go on the main deck, instead of in the hulls, the way they are aboard other catamarans. (The crew cabins, galley, and stowage areas occupy the below-decks areas instead.) Two of the staterooms additionally have direct access to the forward cockpit, a nice touch. Swaths of glass are used as walls and overheads throughout to lighten and brighten the interior.
So what about the garden and solar panels mentioned above? While the panels are on deck, they’re not in a guest traffic area, so they won’t be inadvertently damaged, and the garden lies below the deck slope closest to the flying bridge. The area can alternately be fitted out as a cinema for anyone lacking a green thumb.
The following slideshow gives you a better idea of what the One Fifty – poised to become the world’s largest sailing catamaran – is all about.
