Dockwise Yacht Transport has established itself as a leader when it comes to carrying yachts of all sizes to and from the most popular cruising grounds around the world. Since 1987, it’s been providing float-on, float-off transportation services, in which yachts literally cruise on and off the carrier ship, thanks to them being fitted with submerging bays. Other companies solely use cranes to lift yachts on and off their carrier ships, which are certainly suitable, but some owners prefer the convenience of driving right onto/off the vessel.
Earlier this week, Dockwise’s Super Servant 4 arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, after a trip that originated in Palma de Mallorca and made a stop in St. Thomas, to pick up more yachts. More than 30 boats ranging from a 30-foot sailboat to the 112-foot megayacht My Iguana were onboard the 169.39-meter (556-foot) Super Servant 4 upon arrival stateside. I was among three journalists who, along with owners and crew, got to board the vessel for the offloading process.
Reading about that process isn’t nearly as interesting as seeing it in action. Here’s a six-minute video showcasing the carefully orchestrated procedure and how the Dockwise crew (in orange jumpsuits) prepares lines and monitors departures. All told, it was more than a two-hour process, with the yachts heading off to places like New York, Maine, and other New England locales.
