Sometimes the way to move forward is to take a look back. That’s the philosophy behind a new series called Vintage from Codecasa. The idea is to marry the classic, timeless style of yachting’s past with a fully modern engineering package.
If the navy hull of the 42-meter (138-foot) Vintage shown here doesn’t tip you off to the timeless theme, then the overall styling, particularly the plumb bow, should. Codecasa was inspired by a few well-known yachts for the look, including Marlin, a 51-foot commuter built in 1930. Marlin was owned by Joseph Kennedy, patriarch of the famed Kennedy family. When he became President, John F. Kennedy used her as an unofficial Presidential yacht.
The steel hull of the Vintage 42 will be designed for leisurely cruising, not the get-there-in-a-hurry goal of some of today’s designs. Top speed should be 17 knots, thanks to twin 1,650-hp Caterpillar diesels. With speed dialed back to 11 knots, the Vintage 42 should see a 4,000-nautical-mile range. Given the 2.4-meter (7’9”) draft, plenty of anchorages will be at her disposal.
For the interior, Codecasa has teamed once again with Della Role, the design firm behind many previous launches. The guest stateroom shown here is one of four that complement the owner’s suite. Note the use of white paneling, another throwback element. The overall decor promises to be clean, crisp. As for spacial relations, while classic yachts tended to be narrower, Codecasa is ensuring the Vintage 42 keeps up with modern demands. Beam will be about 9 meters (29’5”).
The first Vintage 42 should launch next year, built to Lloyd’s classification and in compliance with MCA regulations.
