Over the past few years, windows aboard yachts of all sizes have been increasing in size. Whether it’s due to owner requests, builders and designers trying to attract more interest, or a combination of the two, it makes sense. After all, who wants to go to sea feeling as if he or she is trapped inside a dark box?
Mondo Marine is the latest to try to bring the outdoors inside, through a joint effort with fellow Italian firm Giugiaro Architettura. Deep 51 is the name they’ve given to the resulting concept project.
The profile of the all-aluminum 51-meter (167-footer) might strike you as being far more architectural than that of most yachts. It’s not a surprise given Giugiaro Architettura’s background in industrial design and city planning. But that’s not to say that Deep 51 is the firm’s first megayacht project. It previously collaborated with Baglietto on Antalis, a 48-meter (157-footer).
So what else makes Deep 51 different? Besides an abundance of windows along each side, the yacht employs some clever light-enhancing tricks. The pool located forward on the bridge deck, for example, has a glass bottom, acting as a skylight for the master suite directly below. Inside, rooms are intended to look and feel voluminous, through the already-mentioned oversized windows, plus minimal use of bulkheads and specialized lighting design. The ten guests who can stay aboard should enjoy the panoramic nature of the gym/sauna in particular, on the sundeck.
Even with her design spin, Deep 51 isn’t entirely unusual. She’s expected to cruise at 17 knots and top out at 19 knots thanks to twin MTU 12V 4000 M73 diesels. Mondo Marine is considering the use of waterjets, too.
