A few weeks from now, the ground breaking will take place for an additional yacht-building facility for Mulder Shipyard.
The Holland-based, family-run firm has been fielding increasing inquiries for yachts larger than 28 meters (92 feet), the maximum size it currently builds. Due to space limitation, which also affect storage and its ability to move existing models around in the build shed, Mulder applied for and received permits to establish a new facility about 10 kilometers (six miles) from the current one. Both shipyards will be about a 20-minute drive from Schiphol airport.
The new, three-story yard will focus on projects from 18 to 40 meters (59 to 131 feet) LOA, while Mulder’s existing yard will be dedicated to yachts up to 18 meters. Encompassing 7,000 square meters (nearly 75,350 square feet), the new yard will handle both new builds and refits. As the illustration here shows, it will feature two halls, one with two drydocks, allowing simultaneous construction and fit-out of multiple yachts. In fact, the second hall, at right in the illustration, will be able to accommodate four yachts to 30 meters (98 feet). To improve the efficiency of work flow, Mulder will also set up various departments on the three different levels. Interior-design and electrical installations, for example, will be on one floor, with work related to engines, thrusters, and related gear on a separate level. Finally, Mulder plans to install a 100-ton-capacity boat lift and, of course, offices.
The new yard should open in 2012, with the first launch to occur the following year.
