Come 2015, Heesen Yachts plans to deliver the all-aluminum 164-foot (50-meter) megayacht shown here, based on a Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF).
You may recall that Heesen already signed a 213-foot (65-meter) FDHF, for delivery in 2013. The FDHF was created by Van Oossanen and Associates. It incorporates design features that have a large effect on hydrodynamic resistance over the whole speed range, rather than just top speed. The design elements that receive attention include the area of the immersed transom, bulbous bow, trim control, and spray rails. The end result is better fuel efficiency.
In fact, Heesen says that YN 16750, the hull number for the new project, will have a fuel capacity of about 11,888 gallons (45,000 liters). When you examine the fuel capacity of a more traditional displacement yacht of the same LOA, it’s nearly half the amount. As to speed, Heesen’s YN 16750 should top out at 18.5 knots (half load), powered by twin 1,340-hp MTU 8V 4000 M63L diesel engines. The leisurely turn of speed and fuel economy are nicely complemented by a draft that should permit Heesen’s YN 16750 to pull into multiple anchorages. It’s just seven feet (2.15 meters).
The above-mentioned reduction in fuel capacity translates into a reduction in tank size. This in turn translates into more space in the crew quarters, thanks to Heesen’s frequent naval architecture and engineering collaborator, Omega Architects. Specifically, there’s more stowage beneath the crew mess.
Omega Architects is itself collaborating with another design firm, AB Studio, for styling and the general arrangement. Outside, this Heesen will grab attention thanks to the vertical bow and large expanses of glass. AB Studio is further handling interior design. Heesen’s YN 16750 provides four staterooms (two VIPs and two twins) below decks. The master suite is, of course, on the main deck. It’s nearly 657 square feet (61 square meters) and includes separate dressing areas containing individual heads. Dark joinery elements will create a contrast against swamp oak paneling throughout these areas. Beam is a comfortable 29’5” (9 meters).
No doubt friends and family will enjoy the beach club, too, featuring a sauna and hammam. Unlike some other megayachts, where the transom doubles as a tender garage and becomes the beach club when the toys are offloaded, YN 16750 will stow tenders forward. And, in keeping with the reality of yacht owners and guests spending abundant time outdoors, YN 16750 also has 2,551 square feet (237 square meters) of alfresco space.
YN 16750 will meet ABS classification and comply with the MCA code.
