Two years after construction started, the first Swan 105 RS from Nautor’s Swan will soon undergo systems’ testing. It’s in preparation for her official launch and sea trials, for handover this summer.
The Swan 105 RS blends design by two notable names: Germán Frers and Beiderbeck Designs. The Frers team has long collaborated with Nautor’s Swan. Beiderbeck Design came in at the request of the owner, for the interiors and general arrangement. This Swan 105 RS is a semi-custom version of the Swan 105. She’s intended as a performance cruiser with abundant enclosed and alfresco relaxation areas.
Nautor’s Swan says this Swan 105 RS has been more challenging, in a good way. She’s built in compliance with Germanischer Lloyd’s classification and the MCA Code. In addition, the hull was laid using epoxy prepreg-SPRINT sandwich materials. The shipyard says it’s the first to use this process on such a large single unit like a hull. SPRINT stands for SP Resin Infusion Technology. It’s patented by Gurit, a company that has long supplied composite items to the marine industry. In brief, SPRINT materials are different than traditional prepreg materials. The fiberglass in the reinforced materials stay dry and unimpregnated by the resin. SPRINT materials are laid up and vacuum-bagged like conventional prepreg items, but another difference occurs here, too. When the vacuum is applied, the air trapped in the glass-fiber bundles and between the layers is more easily removed. Then, when the curing process starts, the resin fills in where the air used to be. Once curing ends, there are far fewer voids, therefore a stronger laminate.
Furthermore, this Swan 105 RS should have lower sound levels. Nautor’s Swan will take measurements out on the water. It’s not saying whether the owner requested specific levels. However, Kristian Kjellmann, the Swan 105 RS project manager, does say that a consultant collaborated with the in-house team. “We used data from past projects and combined this with the most innovative materials and today’s expertise to reduce the noise level, especially in the owner’s and guest areas,” he explains.
The Swan 105 RS is currently receiving her saloon and cockpit furniture. Nautor’s Swan is also fitting the bimini and deckhouse windows. All interior furnishings plus the wood trim for overheads and soles was made at the woodshop owned by Nautor’s Swan. The rendering of the aft cabin above (likely the master suite) reveals some of the special touches that the owner requested. Three guest staterooms are also aboard the Swan 105 RS. Overall, the yacht has a 24’3” (7.42-meter) beam.
