Here’s your first look at Project Freefall, the first Amels 242 from Amels. The full model name is Limited Editions Amels 242, since she is part of the Limited Editions semi-custom offerings. A Twitter user spotter her being towed into the Dutch builder’s facilities in Vlissingen (“Flushing” in English), for fit out and completion.
Project Freefall was announced last autumn, by Moran Yacht & Ship. Amels based some of the ideas behind the Amels 242 on the large custom megayachts it has delivered in the past, such as Montkaj and Ilona. Of course, given the number of Limited Editions yachts it has sold in recent years, the yard also saw an opportunity to extend the range. (The largest is the Amels 272.) After all, not every yacht buyer wishes to get involved in specifying systems and technical-space arrangements. The Limited Editions yachts still let them arrange relaxation areas the way they wish, and with the designer of their choosing.
The Amels 242’s LOA is 241 feet (73.5 meters), and beam is just shy of 41 feet (12.46 meters). She bears styling by Tim Heywood, who has given the other Limited Editions yachts their distinctive profiles. Project Freefall will feature the interior-design work of Andrew Winch Designs.
The overall features of this first Amels 242 are clearly intended to pamper her owners and guests. There is an entire deck devoted to the owners, for example. It measures 2,583 square feet (240 square feet) and has nicely private sun lounges fully forward. They’re further ideal for enjoying a cocktail, or perhaps a morning cup of coffee, given small, round tables accompanying them. More private alfresco space lies aft on this deck. Two couples among the guests are treated to main-deck VIP staterooms with sitting areas. (Amels says up to 16 people total in the owner’s party can be accommodated aboard the Amels 242.) The captain and a crew of 18 are given good accommodations, too. In an interesting departure from most beach clubs, the one here is amidships. That doesn’t mean the aft part of the yacht is ignored from a creature-comfort standpoint, of course. A rather large pool is situated on the main deck, with a partial glass wall and an infinity edge. The Amels 242 also has a hot tub forward on the uppermost deck, surrounded by sunpads. Should the owners or guests need to get somewhere quickly, a touch-and-go helipad is aft on the deck below.
With a gross tonnage of 1,725, the yacht is plenty voluminous. She should further see a top speed of 16.5 knots and cruise speed of 12.5 knots. Range is anticipated to be 5,000 nautical miles, more than adequate to cross the oceans and keep going.
