When the Perini Navi Cup is held next September, the well-known Perini Navi P2 will be racing against a sistership. That sistership is the project shown here, a 128-foot (39-meter) Philippe Briand design. For now, Perini Navi and the design team are referring to her simply as the 39m Briand.
The 39m Briand sailing superyacht is comparable in size to P2, measuring only about three feet (one meter) longer. She also has a beam of 27’4”. The owner of this all-aluminum new build admired the lines and performance of P2 and requested that be used as a starting point. Briand himself says the 39m Briand will be “very responsive, swift, and agile,” adding that besides being a comfortable cruiser, she’ll be “highly competitive in superyacht regattas.” If P2 is any proof, the 39m Briand should collect plenty of accolades: P2 has won 10 races since her launch in 2008.
The owner of the 39m Briand will see her launch in July. A lifting keel means draft will range from about 11’5” to 18 feet (3.5 to 5.5 meters, respectively). Upwind sail area should be 7,761 square feet (721 square meters), while downwind it will be 13,121 square feet (1,219 square meters). The 39m Briand has some features not seen on P2, such as a furling boom. In addition, she’ll have more usable space due to redistribution of ballast.
That extra space will be welcome when the owner is cruising with friends and family. The rendering above hints at a light, bright decor, enhancing that senses of space. Neither Perini Navi nor Philippe Briand are revealing the full general arrangement. If it’s akin to that of P2, expect to see a full-beam owner’s suite aft and two guest staterooms. For now, we know that the 39m Briand will have a sheltered cockpit.
