What’s old is new again, in the Retro 70.70m concept from PB Behage Yacht Designer.
Piet Behage, owner of the eponymous studio, says “I began to work on some ideas that combined the beauty of classic vessels with the amenities found on modern yachts.” At 231’10” (70.70 meters, hence the name), the Retro 70.70m features a vertical bow, a style prevalent in the early 20th century—and which has gained favor again in more recent years. The hull isn’t all about aesthetics, however. Behage performed tank tests on various hull forms. Yachts a century ago were less beamy than they are today, which of course has an effect on stability—and modern-day megayacht owners aren’t content with just cruising local coasts. Ultimately, Behage determined that a beam of 35’6” (10.8 meters) and draft of 11’5” (3.5 meters) would make the Retro 70.70m meet his, and clients’, stability standards. As for cruising, Retro 70.70m should see more than 5,300 nautical miles at just shy of 13 knots. Behage envisions hybrid propulsion, too, for the increasing importance of fuel economy.
While arguably a classic yacht deserves a classic interior, Behage will develop the decor and general arrangement with a buyer’s input. As a starting point, the Retro 70.70m can have wood and marble soles, and wardrobes that blend into the overall atmosphere. Since modern yachting standards emphasize voluminous feels, headroom will be a generous 7’6” (2.3 meters). Layout-wise, the Retro 70.70m can feature a private library and office in the main-deck, full-beam owner’s suite, with four guest staterooms below decks. Should a buyer often travel with personal assistants or have a nanny, Behage says two further rooms can be devoted to them. Another option: a touch-and-go helipad on the aft deck (not shown in the design above). Either way, the transom can feature a fold-out swim platform.
Equally important, crew will have dedicated stairs from their quarters forward below decks to the main deck, plus separate access to the engine room and equipment areas. Also for the crew’s benefit: walk-around decks and freshwater washdowns via a sprinkler system, similar to a setup installed aboard Grand Cru III, designed by Behage and launched by Benetti Sail Division in 2009.
