An American family is about to start cruising aboard a sky lounge-equipped Arcadia 85. The Italian builder has designated the yacht Arcadia 85S as a result of the special request.
Normally, the Arcadia 85 does not have an upper deck. The owner bought the yacht as a family yacht, so extra space for together time was important. The Arcadia 85S therefore has an intimate sky lounge with seating and a wet bar, plus the wheelhouse. Keeping the profile similar to that of the original design, glass rims the room. The oversize ports can lower, too, much like car windows. More relaxation space lies aft outside.
Arcadia Yachts made another construction change for the Arcadia 85S. It used balsa coring in the forepeak, versus PVC foam. It’s for better sound insulation.
Otherwise, the Arcadia 85S follows the same philosophy as her predecessors. She has solar panels and solar cells, the latter between the panes of glass atop the superstructure. The solar energy is enough to power all hotel loads, except for air conditioning, at anchor. Sunny days shouldn’t cause the interior to heat up, though. Arcadia Yachts studied thermal insulation, which is why krypton gas is contained within the glass panels. The builder says the effect is akin to a 20-cm-thick brick wall. Shades and blinds can deploy when needed, too.
The Arcadia 85S also preserves maximizing usable deck space. The saloon and dining area comprise about 28 feet (8.5 meters) of her LOA. Given the shade of the aft deck, it should be used more frequently. All areas here contain loose furnishings, for convenience.
Eight in the owner’s party are all housed below decks. The master is amidships, joined by a forward VIP and two twins. Four crew take care of the Arcadia 85S operations, watertoy launchings, and overall service needs. The chef can share cooking tips with guests, too, thanks to the galley being open to the saloon.
Arcadia Yachts says twin 730-hp MANs should let the Arcadia 85S see an 850-nautical-mile range at 12 knots. Cruise speed should be 16 knots, while top end is reportedly 18 knots.
