Picture an 84-footer doing a blistering 48 knots. That’s the equivalent of 55 mph, the legal speed limit on a number of American highways. It’s also what the Otam http://www.otam.it Mystere clocked on her first sea trials. She’s the fourth in the Millennium 80 HT series. LOA: 83’6”, or 25.5 meters.
Obviously, the owner won’t be pushing Mystere to her maximum rpm on a regular basis. But, he won’t have to compromise on thrilling speeds. Otam says Mystere can cruise at 41 knots, powered by twin 2,600-hp MTUs with Arneson surface drives. On an interesting side note, the megayacht makes these speeds with two fewer engines than her predecessor. Mr. Brown, the third in the series, has quadruple MTUs and surface drives. However, Mr. Brown also hits 54 knots.
The engine change does not represent a loss for Mystere, however. In fact, it represents a gain. Specifically, it let Otam devote more space to relaxation, particularly in the owner’s suite. The megayacht actually has double sleeping spaces in the suite. Furthermore, the owner wanted an extra VIP stateroom, bringing the total to three, and to keep the galley separate from the crew’s quarters. Oftentimes yachts such as this situate the galley in the crew area.
The ambiance onboard is accentuated as much by the interior design as it is by the engineering. Mystere makes good use of glossy ebony, with chromed steel inserts. Teak soles and carpeting alternate throughout, too. Making all of this even more comfortable is strong sound attenuation. Otam says sound levels in the master suite and saloon were each just 44 decibels at cruising speed, even with a genset running and air conditioning at 80 percent load.
