For the last several months, a project known as Shu has kept yacht watchers’ attention. Built at Lürssen, she was pretty secretive. Now that sea trials are over, the shipyard is sharing some information.
Here are five fast facts finally confirmed about the superyacht still called Shu.
1. She’s bigger than we thought. She’s not dramatically bigger, but in a world where inches make a difference as to whether a megayacht makes the world’s 100 largest yachts, size counts nonetheless. Shu measures 446 feet (136 meters). Yacht watchers estimated her to be 426 feet (130 meters) late last year, due to video footage from June through November 2016. In that footage, Al Lusail sat in the background, measuring 403 feet (123 meters). Shu was clearly larger. No one took a guess at beam, however. The confirmed width is 67 feet (20.5 meters).
2. The megayacht marks another styling collaboration with Espen Oeino. Lürssen and Oeino have produced numerous projects together. In fact, together, they’re responsible for about one-third of the world’s largest yachts. They include Dilbar, Al Said, Amadea, and Octopus. Each of these yachts is different, of course, as is Shu. Shu has several fold-down platforms and balconies for her guests. She also has two helipads: one on the sundeck, and one on the bridge deck. The bigger attraction outside, though, is the enormous swimming pool aft.
3. Shu is the second collaboration among Oeino, Lürssen, and interior designer Mark Berryman. The first was nearly 10 years ago: Arkley, in 2009, which is now known as Caipirhina. Unfortunately, not much is available facts-wise about the decor or interior configuration of Shu. Lürssen does say that “neutral tones and tactile finishes” appear, though. In addition, Peter Lürssen, managing partner of the shipyard, says, “The owner’s in put within all aspects of the yacht’s design was clear, strong, and exacting.” The yacht further posed “a significant challenge.”
Expect to see Shu cruising this coming fall.
