Each year, the recruitment specialist YPI Crew analyzes trends in crew hiring, among other issues related to the hands on deck. In its latest survey, it finds encouraging insight into megayacht crew jobs. Not only are position requests rising, but also they’re rising especially aboard mega-size megayachts.
YPI Crew has been analyzing hiring trends since its founding 16 years ago. Some of the results for 2018 may not surprise you. For example, the company discovered that the overwhelming majority of job requests, 94 percent, were aboard motoryachts. On a related note, the 2018 motoryacht figure was higher than the 2017 figure, by 3.5 percent. Regardless, for job requests among both power and sail craft, 2018 represented a 16-percent increase over 2017.
Additionally noteworthy, YPI Crew finds that most megayacht crew jobs last year were aboard quite large yachts. In fact, 40 percent of all positions were aboard vessels of 233 feet (71 meters) and up. This, too, represented an increase over 2017, of 18 percent. It’s the fourth year in a row that the majority of openings were aboard such large vessels. Regardless, “smaller” yachts down to 167 feet (51 meters) offered a fair amount of jobs as well, 30 percent.
Specific position requests were also quite interesting. YPI Crew states that 2018 was the busiest in its history for stewardess and steward registrations. Engineering jobs also remained in demand, with last year being the second-busiest for registrations. The company does raise a red flag, though, when it comes to officer registrations. Since these were at record numbers, the firm says this “raises the question of whether there will be enough captain jobs in the future.” Captain positions were just a fraction of overall openings in 2018: four percent.
Even with this concern, YPI Crew finds megayacht crew jobs hold increasing interest among newcomers. Registrations rose eight percent among first-timers in 2018 versus 2017. Furthermore, 2018 represented an impressive 23-percent increase in newcomer registrations compared to 2016.
Finally, the most opportunities awaited aboard private yachts. Only 34 percent of megayacht crew jobs were on charter yachts.
