Todd Roberts, the president of Marine Group Boat Works, has seen the superyacht-service industry change dramatically over his nearly 20-year career with the California-based yard. It has particularly changed over the past decade, which is the time that has passed since he was one of our first guests on the Megayacht News Radio podcast. Among the big changes: Owners of super-size superyachts are more reluctant to relinquish their yachts for yard periods.
In this episode, our editor, Diane M. Byrne, also talks with Roberts about how Marine Group Boat Works has expanded, as well as whether the superyacht service industry is doing right by its customers—namely, the owners.
They further discuss:
- how the yard refits and repairs not just yachts, but also military and commercial craft, and how yacht crew should borrow a page from the military in specifying the work needing to be done
- what projects are going on now, plus coming for the summer
- how plans are underway for adding new, larger lifting capacity
- how refit yards need to better understand the concept of time when owners say it’s their most valuable asset
- and more.
