By christening its new, 3,240-ton shiplift by hauling a large megayacht in late August, Savannah Yacht Center has achieved two significant accomplishments. These accomplishments are not just for the Georgia-based service and refit yard, though. They hold significance for the refit industry in the whole of the United States. First, Savannah Yacht Center is the only stateside superyacht-specific shipyard capable of catering to multiple yachts exceeding 197 feet (60 meters) simultaneously. Second, thanks to the new shiplift, it is the only refit yard along the U.S. East Coast capable of handling yachts up to 459 feet (140 meters).
Honor, a 239’5” (73-meter) project from Turquoise Yachts, arrived at Savannah Yacht Center in late August. Just days after the shipyard successfully tested the new shiplift, Honor floated on in, and the staff hauled her. Once the flagship of Turquoise Yachts (previously known as Vicky), delivered in 2012, the megayacht has a gross tonnage of 1,730.
The shiplift complements the facility’s existing operations. It has more than 1,197 feet (365 meters) of floating docks, for instance, for in-water service. It also has a drydock for the world’s largest yachts to the above-mentioned 459 feet. In addition, Savannah Yacht Center contains its own electrical, fabrication, and joinery shops. Plus, Pinmar operates the paint shed on site. In fact, it will repaint Honor during her stay.
To keep the crew of Honor, and the crews of other yachts, content while in Savannah, the yard has an on-site restaurant and gym. It also offers concierge services. Therefore, it can arrange visits to nearby Hilton Head, South Carolina, or visits to the numerous historical sites within Savannah.
“While our facilities and operations have become decidedly more modern, our corporate philosophy has remained the same,” says Jim Berulis, Savannah Yacht Center’s vice president. “You must always earn the respect and confidence of those with whom you do business. That believe is not only the bedrock of our successful past, but also the foundation of our bright future.”
