A day aboard Octopus is not like any other day aboard a private yacht. Of course, she has beautiful relaxation areas. You’ll get to see some of those luxury areas in this video, too, including the large formal dining area (with two tables) and the even larger alfresco bar and pool area. In addition, you get to see her seven watertoys/tenders in fleet-like fashion, cruising in tandem with her. But, what sets Octopus apart is her purpose. The 414-footer (126-meter), which recently hit the brokerage market, is for cruising globally in extreme conditions. In other words, a day aboard Octopus is a day of exploration and adventure.
That’s the beauty of this video. Rather than focus entirely on the interior luxury, like so many superyacht videos, it instead highlights her technical marvels. Several of them were well ahead of their time, in fact, when Octopus saw delivery in 2003. Take note, for instance, of the floodable tender garage. It’s really akin to a drydock. It houses not just the primary tender, Man of War (a Hinckley Talaria, no less), but also an extraordinary submarine. Why “extraordinary”? It’s 60 feet (18.3 meters) long, and seats 10 people. Neither toy is exactly lightweight, either.
As another example, you get to see the helicopter hangar. Giving perspective to its dimensions, one of the helis slides inside the hangar as the camera rolls, putting the dimensions into perspective. Both helicopters can stow in here.
Overall, the video highlights how a day aboard Octopus is indeed an adventure. It starts with the helicopter landing and sees the would-be owners plan a few hours’ activity with the captain. It ends fittingly with a champagne toast after sunset. In between, the scenes of guests scuba diving around an old shipwreck would warm the heart of the late owner, Paul Allen. (Allen often used Octopus, and his other yachts, to help document important underwater maritime history.)
Octopus is part of the central agency of Fraser Yachts. Her asking price is €295 million (about $328 million at press time).
