Six years have passed since the Parigi family took over a shipyard on the Adriatic Coast of Italy to build yachts, under the brand Italian Vessels. A current project, the Wide Space displacement yacht, is just now shining a light on Italian Vessels. However, since the megayacht comes from the design boards of Spadolini Design, chances are more people will become familiar with it.
Italian Vessels occupies the Cantieri Navali di Termoli shipyard. It sits in the town of Termoli, about three hours from Rome by car. Initially a fishing port, Termoli is popular with Italian families seeking holidays. Prior to the family acquisition, the shipyard constructed about 200 vessels, ranging from tankers and tugboats to yachts. Tommaso Spadolini, who celebrated four decades in yacht design in 2018, has known the Parigi patriarch Mario for some time and was “delighted when he and his two sons approached me to design a new project.,” he says.
As a former captain and surveyor, Mario Parigi envisioned Italian Vessels constructing steel and aluminum yachts in sizes dominated by fiberglass. In addition, he believes there’s a market for transatlantic “small” megayachts. Therefore, he and Spadolini came up with two 93’5” (28.5-meter) displacement yachts, with hulls by Umberto Tagliavini. One, the Enjoy style, resembles an explorer. The other, though, is the above-mentioned Wide Space design. About 70 percent of the superstructure is the same as that for the Enjoy. However, she has somewhat more typical yacht looks. Plus, she has a longer aft upper deck.
To attract long-range cruisers, Italian Vessels and Spadolini say the Wide Space yacht should see upwards of 3,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. The twin 560-hp MANs should allow a top end around 13 knots, too. Equally impressive, the megayacht carries 7,925 gallons (30,000 liters) of fuel. To benefit the captain, wing stations flank the wheelhouse.
With a 23’7” (7.21-meter) beam, the well-named Wide Space has an advantageous 172-square-foot (16-square-meter) skylounge. Also unusual for this LOA, the master suite sits forward on the main deck. Otherwise, the general arrangement is as you might expect. Four staterooms sit below decks for guests, along with the captain’s cabin and a crew cabin, both with direct access up to the galley. While they have a small mess below, too, you can alternately ask for an extra guest cabin in its place. You can further stow a tender on the hydraulic swim platform. Additional toys stow in the lazarette, or on the foredeck.
Italian Vessels anticipates launching the Wide Space motoryacht this fall, experiencing a slight delay due to the global health emergency.
