Super-size superyachts hold great appeal to some buyers. But, because they are simply too big for some tastes, motherships and support vessels attract a different set of cruisers. However, most of these support-yacht owners have bought their craft well after their primary yachts, on the brokerage market. While a few have commissioned special builds, these, like the brokerage yachts, came with pre-set looks and styles. Enter Gill Schmid Design and what the studio has nicknamed the 70-Meter Twins.
As the name suggests, each of the yachts is 230 feet LOA, and bears similar styling. Setting them apart further from typical mothership-support yacht pairs is a shared naval-architecture platform. With build supervision by Dörries Yachts, the 70-Meter Twins bear engineering for adventurous travel in northern and southern climes, including icy conditions. Furthermore, the build and design duo say construction can occur simultaneously, ensuring delivery together as an even more cohesive package.
Additionally attractive, these yachts are meant to travel together. Specifically, Gill Schmid Design created the support yacht (above) as the primary crew home, with accommodations for 23. Equally important, the support yacht serves as the tender-launch pad, plus provisioning and gear stowage. Multiple PWCs, big RIBs, limo tenders, private subs, automobiles, and a dive store all are part of the onboard vision. In fact, this twin can serve as arrival and departure point for the owners and guests. The helicopter can land, guests can enter the reception lounge, and then head to one of the tenders with the crew to head over to the more luxurious mothership. The crew can then stow the helicopter in a heli garage.
As for the luxurious mothership (above), up to 13 crew have accommodations to handle tasks day and night. Six guest suites accompany the master suite, which has a private alfresco dining area and hot tub. Four of the guest cabins are on the bridge deck as well, taking advantage of the views. Speaking of views, a chef’s show kitchen and table ensure dinners are a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. After-dinner drinks can be taken in the piano bar and lounge. Daytime dining options include an area near the pool. And, finally, restful relaxation takes place in the beach club, with a cinema, or the spa, containing a steam room and massage room.
