Family-run Amer Yachts has earned success with a number of semi-custom megayachts over the years, including the Amer Cento. The shipyard is taking a big leap forward with the Amer 70 Steel, an entirely custom project. She’s the largest yacht in its history, too, keeping its craftspeople busy for the next four years.
Thus far, Amer Yachts isn’t revealing much about the yacht. The 230-footer (70-meter) features a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure. Styling and naval architecture is from Optima Design, a fellow Italian company. Antonio Luxardo, Optima Design’s chief designer, penned the displacement hull. Amer Yachts is further collaborating with Giulio Riva as the project manager. Riva and the shipyard previously worked together on a number of refit projects.
For a customer in Europe, the Amer 70 Steel started construction this past March. While it will be some time before interior design starts, Luxury Projects is working with the owner to set the ambience. On a related note, Luxury Projects and Amer Yachts are familiar to one another, currently with yet another unnamed build in the works.
Amer Yachts, owned and operated by the Amerio family (above), certainly is taking a big step with the Amer 70 Steel. However, the 50-year-old builder doesn’t shy away from bold moves. In fact, just a few years ago, it announced it will no longer use fiberglass for some components of its new yachts. Instead, it plans to use Filava, a volcanic fiber. Primarily, it chose to do so because the volcanic fiber is recyclable, plus has good strength and is easy to handle. Fiberglass, unfortunately, is difficult to recycle, and even when it’s possible, it’s expensive.
More details on the Amer 70 Steel should follow later this year. In the meantime, the shipyard continues work on popular series such as the Amer 120.
