The first full weekend in October saw the Feadship Project 1011 yacht depart her construction shed, nearly ready for sea trials. It comes about 15 months after the technical launch of the then-just-joined superstructure and hull. Back then, few details were public about her design and features. Now, however, the owner, who previously cruised aboard a large-length and even larger-volume megayacht, and Feadship are revealing a handful of facts. Here’s a sampling of what it has taken so far to build her and what the owner and guests will get to enjoy following delivery.
GREAT GLASS, PART ONE
If your first thought upon seeing the Feadship Project 1011 yacht is that she has a lot of glass, you’re right. In fact, she has an extremely high amount, 11,840 square feet (1,100 square meters) outside alone. Twelve panels are windbreakers for alfresco guest areas. Another 20 are sliding doors. There’s even more glass inside, which we’ll explain in a moment.
SIGNIFICANTLY CHALLENGING OWNER’S BRIEF
Fully understanding this 337-footer (nearly 103-meter) megayacht requires understanding what the owner wanted in the first place. He liked the spaciousness and creature comforts of his prior yacht, and therefore wanted similar amenities. However, he wanted them in a yacht of about half the volume. The previous yacht came in at a massive 6,000 gross tons. Of course, this new superyacht is still plenty voluminous. But, most importantly, she’ll be able to access certain anchorages and harbors that her predecessor could not.
EXPANSIVE ENGINE ROOM—AND EXTENSIVE ENGINEERING
Typically, super-size superyachts like this have two-level engine rooms. Notably, the owner wanted a single-level space, to free up more volume overall inside for his friends’ and family’s benefit. This required more thought from the design and build teams. Further requiring more thought from them, designing and engineering eight large hull doors. One, in fact, is the largest aboard any Feadship to date, spanning 49 feet (15 meters). It’s for the tender garage. Although the shipyard hasn’t described the heli hangar’s access hatch, the helicopter stows beneath the foredeck helipad.
POOLS, POOLS, AND MORE POOLS
Lots of yachts have pools. Even more have hot tubs. The Feadship Project 1011 yacht takes both further. For instance, the swimming pool’s depth equals the height of the main deck. Additionally, four hot tubs sit out on deck.
GREAT GLASS, PART TWO
Remember how we mentioned there’s a significant amount of glass out on deck? The owner of the Feadship Project 1011 yacht also wanted a glass staircase—one Feadship describes as “towering.” It and an elevator rise up through an atrium. Guests will use the stairs or elevator to access their rooms, where the views out the glass should be extraordinary. Fourteen guests have staterooms on the main deck, where the windows are about 20 feet (6 meters) wide. Four more guests have pool-deck VIP staterooms. Naturally, the owner’s stateroom has prime real estate on its own deck.
COOL CAPTAIN AND CREW CABINS
Finally, the captain and crew have significant space. The captain’s quarters are on the pool deck, near the ship’s office. Twenty (yes, 20) crew cabins sit below decks for the rest of the team.
HANDS-ON OWNER
Being a prior Feadship customer, the owner “had a very clear idea of what we are capable of and pushed the boundaries in terms of design and engineering,” notes Henk de Vries, Feadship’s CEO and a Feadship director. He pushed for something else, too. “He wanted to be part of the team, which ordinarily is something we try to avoid,” de Vries continues. “He was fully prepared to collaborate, and our working relationship ended up being both friendly and fun!”
Sea trials over the next few weeks should confirm an expected top speed of 17½ knots and cruising speed of 12 knots.
