Obviously custom yachts reflect their owners’ personal preferences, but many deliveries still have nearly the same layouts. The yacht SAN, which Alia Yachts is delivering this month, stands apart.
Firstly, the signing of the superyacht made history. The 148-footer (45-meter) is the longest yacht featuring Volvo Penta’s IPS propulsion. Four of the compact Volvo Penta units are onboard, in fact. Proven over about two decades now, the IPS system consumes about 30 percent less fuel and emits 30 percent fewer emissions than traditional shaft engines. Additionally, it creates about 50 percent less noise, and boosts range by about 40 percent. (Unfortunately, Alia Yachts has not revealed the figures for SAN.) IPS further makes a yacht more maneuverable.
Yet another way that the yacht SAN sets herself apart is her layout. In working with Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, the owner created an entirely open-plan layout. Specifically, it’s unobstructed from the tip of the bow to the edge of the transom. Opening up the look and feel even more, sliding doors sit fully forward and fully aft. In combination with full-height glass, the sensation should please even the pickiest cruiser who steps aboard.
Interestingly, though, the main deck doesn’t include the master suite. It’s become expected for yacht buyers to put their stateroom in the prime position fully forward, since it allows taking advantage of great views. Sometimes, too, it takes advantage of private alfresco space. The owner of the yacht SAN, however, chose to put the master stateroom below decks, with the four guest staterooms. There’s something to be said for the position, however, since vessels’ lowest levels are often more comfortable while at sea.
With an abundance of highly personalized details throughout the interior, “SAN is a striking and innovative boat that highlights our strengths as a truly custom builder,” says Alia President, Gökhan Çelik. “It’s projects like this that attract the best clients from all over the world.”
Following her maiden cruising season, San will appear at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.
In the meantime, Alia Yachts has two more same-size custom motoryachts on its order books. They’re among five in total that it’s building currently.
