Not only is NautiGuys a popular YouTube channel, but also the husband-and-wife team of Rico and Victoria. Nine years ago, they got married and bought their first boat together. In the years afterward, they launched their first YouTube channel, called NautiStyles, taking viewers onboard a variety of boats and yachts around the world. Simultaneously, Rico and Victoria obtained U.S. Coast Guard captain’s licenses and began planning their next yacht. In fact, this yacht would be “the biggest purchase of our lives,” as Victoria puts it. The yacht is a Bering 82, and the NautiGuys channel chronicles their research, design, and build process. in this episode, they take you through the partially constructed project at the shipyard in Turkey.
Firstly, though, a little more background information. Rico and Victoria realized that they would benefit from a good deal of space after compiling a long list of wants and must-haves. Yet another reason is how they live on the water. “Live” is the key word, too, since they are true liveaboards. Ultimately, they visited Bering Yachts in Turkey and discussed several of the models. Initially, they sealed a deal to build a Bering 75. The voluminous nature of the design convinced the shipyard to rename the model the Bering 82.
Technically, the Bering 82 isn’t 82 feet; she’s 77 feet (23.99 meters) LOA. But, she can accommodate a total of 10 guests and two crewmembers. With Rico and Victoria each being captains, they’ll take the wheel themselves.
The excitement and wonder throughout this NautiGuys episode are palpable. At one point, Victoria exclaims, “This beam is ridiculous!” (It’s 24 feet/7.29 meters.) Rico and Victoria have visited the shipyard previously, but at this construction stage, work progresses rapidly. Cabling is in place in some areas, for example, as is insulation, none of which was present during their last visit. They—and you—get good close-up looks at the “guts” that make all the pretty things possible. It’s a rare behind-the-scenes look at semi-custom yacht construction, from the owners’ point of view. Rarely do owners take such personal interest in things like sub-floors and piping.
Since the NautiGuys couple will live aboard, they thoroughly examine every nook and cranny possible. The episode just went live within the past two weeks, so everything you see is still quite current. Naturally, the couple will continue to provide updates, so to see the ongoing progress, you can subscribe to their channel.
