The island of Kaag in The Netherlands is just half a square mile (about 1.3 square kilometers) in size. But, being home to Feadship’s Royal Van Lent shipyard, it sees some of the largest yachts in the world launch. November 2 was the most recent of those days, with the 249-foot (75.75-meter) yacht One marking her official launch.
Previously called Project 825, representing her hull number, the megayacht takes private cruising and the enjoyment of charter guests into account. “The brief was for a masculine design that was also timeless and elegant,” adds Thijs Orth, a designer from De Voogt Naval Architects. Therefore, straight lines and chamfered edges dominate, with classic tumblehome aft and similar slopes on the sundeck roof sides. “The predominantly straight lines and bold forms are combined with subtly nuanced surfaces that catch the light and make the whole yacht interesting to look at,” Orth explains. “We had a lot of fun designing this yacht,” he adds. “Masculine elegance is not an easy look to achieve, but Oneis robust yet sleek and chic at the same time.”
The interior of the yacht One, with accommodations for 12, is by Gilles & Boissier. The studio, based in Paris, has earned renowned for luxuriously chic designs in which art places a central role. Although the husband-and-wife team isn’t new to yachting, the pair is better known for their work in the Baccarat Hotel in New York and various other hotels, restaurants, and private residences. The décor details for the new Feadship aren’t available, but some areas are reportedly quite lavish. These include the full-beam VIP suite, with its own lounge, on the main deck. Capable of doubling as a second master suite, it further has an integrated balcony, usable underway. The main master, meanwhile, is one deck up, with a private alfresco space. The owners—or primary charter guests—can soak in a hot tub while taking in the surroundings.
Since wellness onboard is still a strong trend, the yacht One features an aft-facing gym on the bridge deck. Workouts come with a view thanks to wrap-around glass—and refreshing breezes, too, since the glass opens on three sides.
Outdoor enjoyment will come in many forms. For instance, a big pool occupies the aft main deck. It has a glass bottom, too, filtering natural light into the beach club. A hot tub sits aft on the sundeck. When guests want to indulge in an ocean swim, integral swim stairs in the broad swim platform make it easier to access the water. The swim platform further makes it easy to board the plethora of watertoys that can stow in the tender garage, alongside the 18-person crew’s tender and a limo tender. Finally, for scouting new anchorages or simply enjoying amazing views, a helicopter can use the raised foredeck for touch-and-go operations.
The yacht One, which is for sale through Feadship and Edmiston, will be ready for delivery early next year. Interested parties should pay particular attention to the teak decking. Laid diagonally, the pattern is a first for Feadship.
