Just as yacht ownership has transformed into a family affair, yacht charter is increasingly all about generations enjoying time together. That’s why we asked Sarah Egger, Fraser Yachts’ charter manager, to provide insights on family-friendly Bahamas yacht charter experiences. Currently, and conveniently, it’s peak season in the region, running straight through to April. The country is also perennially popular because every island has a uniqueness. Some of these ideas therefore should pique your interest.
The Bahamas offer a kaleidoscope of experiences, with something special for every member of the family. For us Floridians, it is a playground in our backyard. It’s easy to get to by yacht, private boat, speed ferry, commercial or private plane, or, for the real experience, a sea plane! Whether searching for sand dollars on white-sand beaches, snorkeling through vibrant coral reefs, or joining a local fish fry, you’ll find it’s a great destination. These five experiences will further show you why.
Swim With Pigs and Nurse Sharks
Location: Staniel Cay (swimming pigs) and Compass Cay (nurse sharks)
The pigs of Staniel Cay or Pig Beach at Big Major Cay, located in the Exumas, are among the most famous area attractions. Delight the kids with the chance to swim alongside these friendly and photogenic pigs or gently cuddle with nurse sharks. The pigs swim out to boats as they arrive, seeking food or attention. I recommend bringing out healthy snacks like apples and carrots (and to avoid processed food). These encounters are safe and memorable for all ages, offering an intimate connection with marine life in crystal-clear waters.
Play on Pink-Sand Beaches
Location: Harbour Island
Family-friendly Bahamas yacht charter experiences wouldn’t be complete without an afternoon on Harbour Island’s iconic pink-sand beaches. The rosy hue of this three-mile stretch comes from the shells of microscopic coral insects called foraminifera. Families can enjoy scenic walks, shallow snorkeling, and stunning photo opportunities perfect for building lasting memories. While this is a famous beach, it still feels tranquil due to its expansive length. If the kids get hungry, I recommend dining at Rock House or The Landing in nearby Romora Bay Marina. Alternately, opt for an authentic Bahamian experience at Queen Conch in Dunmore Town.
Explore Eleuthera’s Natural Wonders
Location: Eleuthera
Venture to Eleuthera and take in the natural beauty of the Glass Window Bridge. It’s an awe-inspiring geological phenomenon, where the deep blue Atlantic Ocean meets the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Additionally, check out the Queen’s Bath, a natural rock formation that creates shallow pools during low tide. Further visit Ten Bay Beach, ideal for families and snorkelers seeking secluded shores. Eleuthera is also known for its historic pineapple plantations, which offer a glimpse into the island’s agricultural heritage and tropical charm.
Visit the Hope Town Lighthouse
Location: Abacos
The Abacos are perfect for family-friendly Bahamas yacht charter experiences. They’re a cluster of enchanting islands and cays offering a captivating blend of beautiful scenery and vibrant culture. Make sure you go see the red and white candy-striped lighthouse in the charming village of Hope Town. Built in 1863, the Hope Town Lighthouse is preserved to retain its original mechanisms. In fact, brave travelers climb all 101 steps for the panoramic view at the top! To fuel up for the climb, I recommend dining at Pete’s Pub, a short sail away in Little Harbour. It offers a relaxed, island vibe with fresh seafood and local crafts.
Sandbars and Peaceful Walks
Location: Exumas and Long Island
Anchor near endless sandbars in the Exumas or on Long Island, where your kids can play in shallow waters, search for sea biscuits and sand dollars, and enjoy kayaking or jet skiing. These spots offer serene landscapes ideal for families seeking peaceful fun. Norman’s Cay is the place to start your getaway down to the Exumas. In fact, with its private runway, you can be on your yacht set up with toys in less than 30 minutes.
The Ultimate Fishing Trip
Location: The Berry Islands—Chub Cay and Great Harbour Cay
Made up of nearly 30 cays, The Berry Islands are a mecca for fishing and diving in the Bahamas. Fishing in Great Harbour Cay and Chub Cay—commonly known as “The Billfish Capital of the Bahamas”—is irresistible for avid anglers. Simultaneously, fishing is a great activity for multi-generational families. Situated along the Tongue of the Ocean, a deep underwater trench, The Berry Islands draw an abundance of marine life. What’s more, hammerhead sharks migrate through every year. If you visit these islands, you have to purchase fresh conch from a local fisherman. It’s a delicacy in the Bahamas!
