When a yacht owner returns to the same shipyard again and again, you know there’s a strong level of trust. Still, though, when the shipyard has never built something as large as what the owner wants, it can be a challenge. Things worked out well for both Apremare and the owner of the yacht Gipsy VI, thankfully.
The 89-foot (27-meter) Gipsy VI is Apremare’s first Maestro 88. Although finalizing her design and completing construction took about two years, her origins actually go back further. In fact, Cataldo Aprea, founder of Apreamare, began sketching the series in 2005. They were cocktail-napkin sketches that became a fully engineered and designed project all this time later. Aprea enlisted the naval architect Umberto Tagliavini and the designer Marco Casali to work with him and a loyal customer to make it all happen.
Briefly, the biggest Maestro model to date needed to provide the owner and guests with long voyages and the comforts of megayachts. While they were in agreement on the LOA, they believed the model’s hull length should remain beneath the 24-meter (78-foot) regulatory threshold, for simpler operations. Styling-wise, she should look like a time-honored cruiser, a traditional Italian navetta. Simultaneously, the lines should pay some homage to the smaller Maestro models.
Charting her own course was still important, however. Firstly, the yacht Gipsy VI is semi-planing. The rest of the series features full-planing hulls. The flagship is capable of a top speed exceeding 22 knots and a best range of 1,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. This comes with the optional 2,000-hp MANs. (The standard package is 1,600-hp MANs.) Secondly, solar panels cover the flying bridge, to power a variety of onboard systems. Large-yacht owners are increasingly requesting ways to avoid burning fuel. Lastly, the creature comforts that they expect are onboard. Therefore, the flying bridge has a bar and cooking area. Inside, meanwhile, a music/relaxation studio accompanies the four staterooms. Instead of having five staterooms, the owner of the yacht Gipsy VI wanted a special place for an electric piano.
The owner personalized the full interior, too, with Marco Casali. It reflects a contemporary twist on classical nautical style, with white-slatted ceilings and abundant teak. Additionally, soft tones and shapes predominate.
With a transom garage housing several watertoys and a 13-foot (4-meter) tender, Gipsy VI can support entertaining groups of guests or just special couple time. She’s a spirit who adapts from moment to moment.
