Well, not exactly–but considering John Dane, president and CEO of Trinity Yachts, will be on the U.S. Olympic Team next summer in China, it’s not exactly stretching the truth too much, either.
Dane, a lifelong avid sailor, and his crewman Austin Sperry (who’s also his son-in-law) just won the Star Class Olympic trials, which comprised seven days and 15 races. As if that wasn’t tough enough, going into the last day, only one point separated Dane and Sperry, who were in second place, from the leaders.
If you’re not familiar with Star Class, these boats are considered among the best racing designs around and arguably the most demanding skill-wise.
Here’s wishing Dane the best of luck in Beijing. And don’t tell him I told you, but he’ll be 58 years young during the Olympics–not only the oldest sailor competing but also quite likely the oldest athlete in any event.
