A little over a week from now, Bermuda will cut the ribbon on its first facility dedicated to the megayacht market.
Called the St. George Super Yacht Terminal, it’s located in historic St. George, the island nation’s oldest town–founded in 1612–and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yachts to 300 feet LOA and more will be able to Med moor or dock side-to beginning March 1, plus receive duty-free fueling. Other dockside services include concierge services, a crew recreation area, and WiFi. Services within walking distance include a post office, pharmacy, supermarket, hardware store, florist, sail loft, moped rentals, restaurants, and pubs.
The new facility resulted from a partnership between the Corporation of St. George (the British-style administration of the town) and Bermuda Yacht Services. The latter was created three years ago by Capt. Mark Soares, a Bermuda native with 20 years’ experience in the marine industry, as a means to cater specifically to large yachts. Soares knows those needs well, having captained yachts stateside as well as in the Caribbean, Med, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. He holds an R.Y.A. Yachtmaster Ocean license, Bermuda Marine and Ports engine drivers license, and pilot’s license. Bermuda Yacht Services is additionally part of the Association of Yacht Support Services’ worldwide network of suppliers.
The opening of St. George Super Yacht Terminal is ideal, given that this year is Bermuda’s 400th anniversary. Plenty of celebrations are planned, including one for the 7,000-nautical-mile race known as the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge from June 1 to 15.
