The annual Seatec exhibition in Italy attracts the top names in technology and subcontracting in the marine sector. Esthec was among the exhibitors at the trade show last month, and rather than simply showcase its virtually maintenance-free, composite decking material, it participated in a design contest – and came out on top.
Design students from a variety of universities entered the contest and were permitted to choose teak or alternate materials for their projects’ decks. Not too surprising, given how many young people are ecologically minded, most opted not to use the wood. Furthermore, even though several companies offer composite decking supplies, Esthec was the choice of the majority of the students. The company credits it partly to the fact that its offerings can be cut and laid into a variety of shapes and patterns more readily than wood or plank-patterned composites can. In a statement, Esthec’s management team says, “With these properties, the enthusiastic designers consider Esthec a promising, innovative product.”
Interesting enough, Esthec notes that design contests were held during previous Seatec exhibitions, with some of the triumphant concepts going on to become reality. Will history repeat itself in this case? Only time will tell. But considering leading megayacht builders like Royal Huisman have tested and approved of Esthec, it could very well happen.
