Meet Lucia-M, the first of Jongert Shipyard’s 3900MY series. As the series name implies, the megayacht’s LOA is 39 meters, or about 128 feet.
Why would a shipyard known for its sailing yachts – 325 to date – create a motoryacht line? Simple: because clients asked for it. In fact, initial plans for the series were unveiled in 2008, after discussions with several owners who still liked the Dutch yard’s sailing craft but who wanted to enjoy the space and speed of a power craft.
In fact, according to Folkert Brongers, Jongert’s general manager, the owner of Lucia-M chose the yard around that time because of its intended foray into motoryacht design and its overall experience. The client has owned two motoryachts so far. His knowledge, combined with Jongert’s own research and the collaboration of Azure Naval Architects and Guido de Groot Design, resulted in a few interesting features for the all-aluminum Lucia-M.
Take the increasingly popular glass bridge. Quickly passing are the days of multiple bulky monitors in the wheelhouse. Now, a single touchscreen panel can call up everything from radar to tank levels. You’ll still find, say, four or five panels, but the wheelhouse dash is far less crowded. Lucia-M follows suit.
Another nice touch: a skylight in the master bath that can be darkened when desired. The full-beam master suite, meanwhile, includes a gym and steam bath. Another skylight of sorts is on the flying bridge, where the hardtop is fitted with a glass center. If the owner and guests seek shade, they can stay where they are, as blinds are fitted beneath the glass. They can also sit aft, as a shade slides out from the hardtop.
Jongert still has some finishing work to do, but it anticipates Lucia-M to cruise at 24 knots and top at 28 knots, thanks to twin 4,185-hp MTUs.
In the meantime, the yard continues to work on both power and sailing yachts. In fact, shortly after the new management team acquired the yard last year, it signed a contract for a 2400 SY, a 24-meter (79-foot) sailing yacht.
