Chinese dragon boats are akin to tenders when compared to megayachts, especially the super-size ones built by Lürssen. But they were the boat of choice for the seventh Lürssen Rowing Regatta earlier this month. The regatta is Lürssen’s way of letting the crewmembers of its new-builds and refits have a little fun, especially considering they’re on site for months at a time. This year’s Lürssen Regatta saw 110 crewmembers, plus many Lürssen employees and designers from both Terence Disdale Design and Reymond Langton Design, row their hearts out. Five dragon boats carrying up to 20 paddlers, a helmsman, and a drummer launched from the Vegesack Rowing Club, near Lürssen’s Bremen facility.
If trophies had been handed out for creativity, then the crew of Lady Kathryn V (above) would have won readily. Crazy, colorful outfits (which they switched for red team shirts) and complementary war paint characterized their look, matched by their energy. Alas, Lady Kathryn V’s crew came in second, by a mere 1.4 seconds, to a crew comprised of yachties from two new Lürssen megayachts under construction.
Here are scenes from the Lürssen Rowing Regatta, including the trophy presentation, complete with bubbly.
