Custom-megayacht orders are increasing, and new buyers are entering the market. All the more reason, then, to advise owners and their team how best to select a shipyard. That’s the idea behind “Choosing a Shipyard to Build Your Yacht.” It’s a downloadable guide created by Nick Boksa of Boksa Marine Design.
It may sound silly, but oftentimes with custom yachts, the heart overrules the head, and mistakes get made. “Choosing a Shipyard to Build Your Yacht” outlines key things to prioritize to avoid those. “Building a yacht is often a complex, long-term project as well as a major financial investment,” Boksa states. “Because of this, you’ll want to view your builder as a partner, one who is equally invested in helping you meet all of your requirements while also fulfilling the expectations you have.”
Some concepts covered by “Choosing a Shipyard to Build Your Yacht” include:
- Viability of the Shipyard. “Is the company managing the building project in a financially sound manner?” Boksa writes. “Do they have a consistent track record of starting and finishing projects without interruption and delays due to financial constraints? Is the builder bonded and insured to protect against failure?”
- Organization of the Shipyard. Look for clean buildings and well-cared-for equipment, Boksa recommends in “Choosing a Shipyard to Build Your Yacht.” Yes, yacht construction is dirty work. However, “maintaining a structured work environment is a mark of dedication and an indication of the quality of the end product,” he writes. Equally important is whether the place looks organized to your advisors, particularly the ones who have outlined the design details and timelines.
- Experience With the Type of Yacht You’re Building. “Do you require metal or composite construction? Do you need an innovative propulsion system? Do you require a builder with experience with complicated lifts and doors?”
- Green Technology. This doesn’t just mean eco-friendly yachts. “How will the shipyard manage their waste? How do they manage energy consumption? Does the yard have a real intent on applying green construction methods?”
