Even with divisions focused on cruise ships and the oil and gas industry, the megayacht market is of increasing importance to Blohm+Voss. Over the next year, the company is restructuring some independent divisions under the same roof. It’s further offering lifetime warranties and monitoring equipment on all new builds.
In terms of the restructuring, yacht projects have long been split between Blohm+Voss Shipyards and Blohm+Voss Repair. The Shipyards segment of the company is tasked with addressing new-build megayachts. All service work, whether for yachts or other craft, is managed by Blohm+Voss Repair. Soon, however, regardless of whether you’re building or refitting, your yacht’s in-house project managers and craftspeople will be part of a dedicated superyacht division. This should strengthen internal knowledge sharing. Blohm+Voss’ management team further believes it will lead to build clients becoming refit clients.
Those new-build clients will be keenly interested in the lifetime warranty that Blohm+Voss plans to offer. It’s related to services that the yard has been planning to offer as well, those being onboard monitoring. Blohm+Voss will install monitoring equipment that will relay systems’ statuses to an off-the-yacht location of your choice (say, your yacht manager’s office). The goal is to help you and your advisors better manage necessary maintenance schedules and troubleshoot.
One of the first new builds to benefit from the lifetime warranty and monitoring might very well be the BV80 project (above) unveiled last year. Blohm+Voss remains committed to signing a client for this semi-custom yacht. With tank testing complete and classification society approval in place for the plans, the BV80 reportedly can be built within 30 months upon contract.
