Four months after the first hull launched, the second Sanlorenzo 52 Steel made her move around the shipyard this week.
As you can tell by the photo, there’s still quite a lot of work to do to complete her. The project is set for delivery in early 2018. Construction is taking place at the Sanlorenzo facility in La Spezia, Italy. That’s home to all of the builder’s metal boats, in fact. (Sanlorenzo has two other yards, located in Ameglia and Viareggio. They focus on fiberglass projects only.)
Measuring 171 feet (52 meters), with a 31-foot (9.4-meter) beam, this 52 Steel is made for an owner’s party of 12. This is similar to the first 52 Steel, christened Seven Sins. Though, the series can also have accommodations for a party of 10, which would eliminate one of the below-deck staterooms. As is the choice for nearly all yacht owners these days, the master suite sits on the main deck.
Even with her healthy size, the megayacht still stays below 500 gross tons. The idea is to keep regulatory and manning requirements simpler for the owners.
Another idea is to offer owners long-range cruising. Sanlorenzo says the Caterpillar propulsion package should allow for a maximum speed of 17 knots. Throttled down to 11 knots, the 52 Steel should see her best range, 4,400 nautical miles.
The owner and guests can take in those nautical miles from multiple places onboard, especially open alfresco spots. The most prominent one is the pool that extends right to the yacht’s aft edge. The bottom of the pool is glass, too. This brightens the beach club, directly beneath it. Brightening the beach club even more: opening side hatches.
Styling for the 52 Steel comes from Officina Italiana Design. It’s interesting to note that this series marks the first partnership between the studio and the shipyard.
Also of note, Sanlorenzo signed a contract for hull number three of the 52 Steel series in January.
