Editor’s note, March 26, 2018: The second Sanlorenzo 52 Steel splashed March 25. Due to a photo on Sanlorenzo’s Facebook page on March 21, we mistakenly believed she had launched then. We have updated the article, also to include the megayacht’s name.
The Sanlorenzo family welcomed a new sister this weekend, seeing the christening of KD. She represents hull number two of the 52 Steel series. As the name states, she’s a metal-hulled megayacht.
Started on spec, the second 52 Steel gained her owner early last year, through brokerage firm West Nautical. Interestingly, the sale occurred the day before Sanlorenzo launched hull number one, Seven Sins. Also interesting, Sanlorenzo moved the second 52 Steel out of her construction shed four months after it delivered Seven Sins. (Construction and finishing for the series all takes place in La Spezia, Italy.)
The 171-foot (52-meter) 52 Steel affords customers a larger megayacht capable of carrying bigger parties. Owners can have accommodations for up to 12 people, for example. This is what the owner of KD, as well as the owner of Seven Sins, selected. Since interior arrangement is yours to tailor, you can have a slightly smaller party of 10 aboard. Either way, bigger cruising plans come along with the package, too. Sanlorenzo says best range is 4,400 nautical miles at 11 knots, under Caterpillar power. Top speed is reportedly 17 knots. All the while, she remains beneath the 500-gross-ton threshold.
With styling by Officina Italiana Design, the 52 Steel carries a beam of 31 feet (9.4 meters). While the profile and technical package appealed to the owner, other aspects did as well. For instance, there’s a pool stretching straight to the transom on the aft main deck. It has a glass bottom, acting as a skylight for the beach club. Further fitted with three fold-down terraces, the beach club will probably be an all-afternoon-long lounging area. Equally noteworthy, the beach club can become a floodable tender garage, capable of holding a boat to 26 feet (8 meters).
Delivery for KD should take place within the next several weeks. Meanwhile, Sanlorenzo continues construction of hull number three in the series. She’s under contract, too. The same is true of hull number four.
