She started construction as Project Alba, but she’s now officially VanTom. The 163-foot (49.8-meter) all-aluminum megayacht was christened today by her owners, cheered on by the craftspeople who’ve been building her since 2015. A photographer captured the moment the traditional bottle of champagne broke against her bow.
The owners acquired the yacht half a year after the keel laying at Heesen. Since she’s part of the builder’s 50-meter, semi-displacement series, the engineering package certainly was part of the appeal. VanTom should achieve a 23-knot maximum speed under MTU power. In addition, she should achieve a 3,100-nautical-mile range at a leisurely 11 knots.
Also part of the appeal: styling by Omega Architects, and the ability to put their own tastes on the interior configuration and decor. VanTom, set for delivery in January, will show off a modern look throughout her spaces. The husband and wife collaborated with Francesco Paszkowski and Margherita Casprini. They also worked with the Dutch builder’s own engineering and design staff. The idea for VanTom was to create an environment of unassuming elegance, relaxing and inviting. As part of this atmosphere, Heesen Interiors, the builder’s own joinery and interiors company, custom-made furnishings for the owners. In addition, Paszkowski and Casprini selected dark and light tones of woods and other luxury materials, like leather and stone. Lacquered surfaces appear throughout VanTom, too.
VanTom, with six staterooms including the main-deck master suite, is strictly for private use.
