In late 2017, Italian yacht owners seeking a custom, robust, even militaristic-looking yacht for diving expeditions worldwide met the team from the Vallicelli design studio. Less than three years later, they are about to enjoy their first dives onboard. The 120-foot (36.6-meter) Project K584 is the result of their vision, coming to life at a shipyard few in yachting may know, but which has had a hand in plenty of projects.
That shipyard is CPN, based in Ancona, Italy. Family-owned, it has served as a supplier to several commercial and yacht builders. For example, it has constructed steel hulls for tugboats and supply ships. For motoryacht builders ranging from Fincantieri as well as Cantiere delle Marche to some of the Ferretti Group brands, too, CPN has cut and shaped metal components such as bollards and anchors. While CPN opened its doors in 1999, it became a dedicated shipyard in 2017.
The history appealed to the owners of K584, who wanted a steel hull and yacht with redundancies. The owners worked with Yachting Expertise, a consultancy firm additionally offering naval-architecture services and technical oversight of construction engineering. The firm also helped coordinate systems integration.
With a 27’1” (8.25-meter) beam and a volume of 299 gross tons, K584 purposely has an unfaired hull, with a bold red “K” forward. Besides carrying a nearly 20-foot (6-meter) dive boat, hoisted by a 2-ton crane, the yacht features accommodations for 10 in the owners’ party. Specifically, two VIP staterooms are aboard, one being below decks and the other forward on the main deck. (On a related note, the main-deck stateroom is adjacent to a gym.) Two additional guest staterooms sit below decks. The owners, meanwhile, enjoy a private aerie aft on the upper deck (above). An awning, integrated in the superstructure, provides welcome shade when they’re outside.
The owners were aboard K584 during her recent sea trials, which saw her top out at just over 14 knots under MAN power. Sea trials also reportedly confirmed a fuel burn of 19.8 gph (75 lph) at 10 knots. That same speed should permit a 6,000-nautical-mile range, too. Gianluca Fenucci, one of the heads of Yachting Expertise, says, “She is a beauty, strong, very efficient and very easy to be operated. What else do you need to be happy and enjoy yachting?”
K584 saw delivery less than 25 months after her contract signing, another fact that pleased the owners. They considered CPN a second home, since they were heavily involved in a lot of details. “Now that all personal, technical, and comfort expectations have been exceeded, we have the privilege and great pleasure to enjoy this superb jewel,” the husband concludes.
