Typically the terms glamor and ice class don’t go together where superyachts are concerned. More often, yachts intended to take on icy waters have tough, rugged exterior looks. That’s what makes the powerful Polaris profile so deceiving. She may look like a customary Mediterranean cruiser, but she’s actually intent on taking on challenging conditions.
Started under the code name King Shark, this 230-footer (70.2-meter) is a step up in size for the owner, from a same-named yacht dating back several years. The owner conceived her to embrace the full spirit of the cruising lifestyle. Specifically, he wanted that spirit everywhere onboard, cohesively from her exterior lines to the interior staterooms and lounges. That’s why it was so important for the powerful Polaris not to look like what everyone thinks of when it comes to polar-capable cruisers.
Furthermore, she may not strike you as a yacht that’ll run on one genset and one diesel engine at times. A diesel-electric propulsion system lets her do exactly that, at 12 knots. It lets her achieve a range of about 6,000 nautical miles, too.
While this video doesn’t take you inside, it does zero in on different aspects of her profile. That profile comes from Enrico Gobbi – Team for Design. Dramatic bow flare and sleek lines come together successfully, with long hull windows complementing her overall appearance. You further see some of her warmer-weather amenities, such as the pool on her main aft deck. It has glass forward and aft, for a true infinity effect. Plus, in a blink-and-you-may-miss-it moment, you see her tender held alongside via her launching cranes. That tender is actually a mini-me, a faithful replica of Polaris herself. Rossinavi built it for the owner, too.
Look for our Megayacht News Onboard feature detailing her design and engineering, including a tour of her interior, in the coming weeks.
