Picture a superyacht with a cruising speed around 44 knots and a maximum speed exceeding 50 knots. Canados is building a boat for experienced owners adhering to those specifications. She’s hull number one of its Gladiator 961 Speed series, a 96-footer (29.22-meter) that will further be the flagship of the Gladiator line.
The Gladiator line provides clients with fast yachts—from 37 to an astounding 85 knots—that simultaneously offer customization options that other builders may not. To ensure the swift speeds, Canados saves weight wherever possible. So, for instance, cleats are titanium and carbon fiber. The deck and superstructure are vacuum-bagged carbon fiber. Fuel tanks are integral to the cored-fiberglass hull, and all furnishings, made in-house, are cored, too.
The speed boost for hull number one comes from triple 2,000-hp MANs, coupled with JDM surface drives. Notably, one of the owners has always driven his own boats and therefore will share duties with the captain. Therefore, a maneuvering joystick and 360-degree cameras are at the helm. Future hull owners can choose the same engine package, or one of two other options. Canados offers twin 2,000-hp MANs with U drives and props, or twin 2,600-hp MTUs with JDM surface drives. The latter two packages will produce speeds closer to 40 knots, but no less fun.
The owners of the first Gladiator 961 Speed yacht are having fun working with interior designer Cristiano Gatto, too. Of course, to preserve the purpose of speed, everything needs to remain within strict weight limits. But, there’s still plenty of room for creativity, with a welcoming and elegant ambience that remains family-oriented and easy to maintain. The owners are putting as much of a priority on their guests’ comfort as they are on their own.
Upon delivery, their Gladiator 961 Speed superyacht’s main deck will feature lacquered wood overhead, white and taupe leathers on the walls, and Esthec faux teak underfoot, to mimic exterior decks. Additionally, linen-covered furnishings will show off gunpowder-colored metal decorative inserts, perhaps a nod to the carbon fiber construction. Definitely a nod to that is varnished carbon fiber cabinetry. Below decks, meanwhile, the same materials will appear, except for real wood soles and custom carpeting. Additionally, some of the four stateroom’s walls will have embossed leather, specially made for Canados.
With a beam of nearly 21 feet (6.35 meters), the Gladiator 961 Speed offers plenty of alfresco relaxation space, too. From the flying bridge to the aft deck, there’s room to sun, dine, and lounge. For instance, the aft deck includes a wetbar with a grill. Plus, it transforms into a movie theater at night when the crew installs two carbon fiber poles at each aft corner of a sunpad here as well. For even more entertainment, glass insets in the swim platform let the family watch the surface drives spin. And, recessed cameras beneath the swim platform project images of the surface drives onto screens throughout the yacht.
Hull number one will debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.
