In Mediterranean marinas where stern-to docking is de rigeur, transom after transom tends to look alike. Until, that is, you come upon a stern like that of the yacht Alunya. An infinity pool is mere inches from the waterline. That, and aft-facing lounges a few steps up, encourage guests to take in the view at anchor. The overall design of this aft area is decidedly different. Once you learn that side “wings” flanking the lounges fold down, too, for more leisure space, you’re even more certain this is no ordinary superyacht.

The owners of Alunya, which premiered at last September’s Monaco Yacht Show, aren’t ordinary, either. According to Benetti—the project is in its 50M B.Now series, the second with the aptly named Oasis Deck aft—they stepped aboard at delivery and didn’t get off until six weeks later. It was mere days before the beginning of the Monaco Yacht Show, too. Seemingly, they would have remained onboard had the shipyard not arranged to exhibit at the event. It’s no surprise that Benetti wanted to showcase her. Further custom design features aboard Alunya prove how she is indeed an oasis for her family.

For instance, rather than an open-plan saloon and dining area, the interior just off the Oasis Deck is essentially two lounges. The first is a conversation-oriented saloon, enveloped in warm maple wood. The other lounge, meanwhile, is a bar, with low-slung club chairs and backlit marble. It’s quite posh, and yet incredibly inviting.

The more you look around these two areas, the more you’ll become aware of what you won’t see. There are no televisions. They’re a purposeful omission, emphasizing the family-focused feel that the owners wanted. Further to that point, the owners have grown children in their 20s who enjoy spending time with their parents.

With a main-deck master and four mirror-image guest staterooms below decks, the yacht Alunya breaks with the typical 12-passenger capacity of 164-footers (50-meters). Since she’s not for charter, though, the owners stayed true to their own intentions. They also stayed true to making their family members or other guests feel incredibly welcome. A help-yourself, onyx-clad coffee bar sits in the foyer just outside the guest staterooms. For themselves, meanwhile, the owners asked Benetti to install a shower overhead in the master balcony.

A family that plays together, stays together, and to that end, Alunya delivers in extra ways. The upper-deck lounge has a games table amid a cozy, chill-out ambience, for instance. In case you’re wondering whether any room onboard has a TV, one is here, albeit an inobtrusive magic-mirror screen. (Side note to the owners: Well played, Mom and Dad; well played.) Sliding-glass doors to the alfresco dining area and more conversation areas can remain open, for extra appeal.

With areas to soak up sun from the foredeck to the sundeck, the yacht Alunya is in some ways traditional. However, her Oasis Deck pool and observation area trump them all. Considering more than a dozen Benetti Oasis Deck projects have gone under contract, more yacht buyers clearly agree.
