Having a megayacht built to class means your vessel adheres to particular standards for safe design, engineering, and construction. It’s peace of mind, plus has an impact on your insurance premiums. In yachting, five classification societies exist: ABS, Bureau Veritas, Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Lloyd’s Register, and RINA. In a major first, all five will be on hand for Masters of Class, a panel discussion during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
The U.S. Superyacht Association is hosting the Masters of Class panel on October 31 at the Bahia Mar Hotel. Through this moderator-led seminar, owners, owners’ representatives, surveyors, and more will receive updates on the latest classification changes. Though the five classification societies have a common goal of minimizing risks, each has its own rules and guidelines. The representatives also will share insight into success stories and share best practices to benefit owners and the industry at large. The ABS, Bureau Veritas, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, and RINA representatives additionally will outline pending issues and challenges. Considering the overwhelming majority of the approximate 10,000 megayachts of 78 feet (24 meters) and larger hold classification notations, the information sharing is crucial.
Interestingly, this first-of-its-kind assembly of all five class societies for the public’s benefit comes on the heels of another first. Recently, the five formally announced the launch of the Yacht Safety and Environmental Consortium (YESC). Emulating a longstanding alliance benefitting commercial shipping, YESC will help yachting professionals and owners solve challenges from the design stage through to operations.
The panel discussion is open to U.S. Superyacht Association members and non-members. So, too, are other panel discussions, including Ask the Flag. Set for October 30, Ask the Flag unites authorities from the Cayman Islands, Marshall Islands, Malta, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the United States. Each will outline flag-related regulation standards and updates.
