A client returning to build another yacht is a source of pride for a yard. Four yachts for the same owner, though, is an extraordinary achievement. Two weeks ago, the Southern Wind Shipyard team in South Africa bade farewell to the yacht Kiboko 4. “It has been an honor to build the fourth yacht for this owner,” says Marco Alberti, Southern Wind’s CEO. While Alberti values “the trust and confidence he has placed in us,” more so he appreciates “the opportunity to deepen our friendship.”
Celebrating her christening last November, the sailing yacht is in the SW108 series, also known as a Smart Custom series. The shipyard prioritized performance, weight optimization, and of course aesthetics for the series. “This yacht represents an evolution for me,” the owner says. She borrows best practices from his three previous yachts, for instance, like spaces for his family. Simultaneously, she reflects “Southern Wind’s continuous advancement in crafting reliable yachts with increasingly elegant and aggressive lines.”
In fact, “compared to my earlier yachts, I’ve taken a leap toward performance,” the owner continues. It comes in the form of a lifting keel, plus a sailplan for racing and cruising. Additionally, he hopes the performance mast and rigging package “will make her highly competitive in regattas.”
Overall, “She will primarily be a family boat, perfect for enjoying Mediterranean summers,” the owner continues. European shores aren’t the only ones they intend to enjoy, though. In a significant first for the family, the owner intends the yacht Kiboko 4 to head across the Atlantic, too, for Caribbean cruising. Better yet, more adventurous travel in the United States may lay in the cards. “I also dream of taking her to Maine someday,” the owner adds.
With a dark paint job for “an even more dynamic and bold aesthetic,” Kiboko 4 is currently making the 7,500-nautical-mile journey to her home in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
