Want to vacation aboard the world’s second-largest sailing superyacht? Here’s a taste of what it’s like to charter the yacht Black Pearl, which further is an extraordinary engineering feat.
Oceanco, the Dutch megayacht builder renown for motoryachts, constructed her in 2018. Although the choice of the yard is unusual, its expertise in extra-large luxury yachts was a big factor. The yacht measures 350 feet (106.7 meters). There’s only one sailing yacht larger than her, and that project, Koru, came five years afterwards. In fact, because she has a single-level engine room—which is another good story—the yacht Black Pearl is much more motoryacht-like in her luxury areas.
Those luxury areas are impressive, too. For instance, just five staterooms are aboard. A multi-level atrium has a glass elevator, to take you from your cabins to the lounges on her other two decks. Soothe your mind, body, and soul in the onboard spa, which includes a hammam, a sauna, and a massage room. Fun fact: Lighting in the spa replicates the nighttime sky over Rotterdam from her launch day. If you and your friends like to party, the beach club becomes a nighttime lounge, and the decks become a dancefloor. Overall, custom-made silk carpets, rich mahogany wood, and custom furnishings adorn the rooms from deck to deck.
As luxurious as the staterooms and leisure areas are, however, the biggest story behind the yacht Black Pearl is how she cruises efficiently. Firstly, she has about 31,000 square feet (2,877 square meters) of sails. Secondly, at the press of a button, the crew can deploy them in less than seven minutes. Her setup is a DynaRig, a version of a square rigger. Besides being the world’s second-largest sailing yacht, she possesses the world’s largest DynaRig. It employs freestanding masts with fixed yards, where the masts rotate in place for sails adjustment. Additionally, no gaps appear between the deployed sails, so they look like three huge sails. This makes her a better performer while underway. The whole deploying and sailing processes are something you need to see—and capture for Instagram—to believe.
Finally, if you’re trying to be more environmentally conscious, the yacht relies on electric engines for ocean crossings. It’s engineered to operate without needing a drop of diesel fuel while crossing the Atlantic. (Read “10 Benefits of Black Pearl’s Hybrid Solution” for a thorough education.)
