In 2005 Amels introduced its first series, surely in recognition of the ability to set certain design and engineering parameters (and thereby control costs) while still allowing megayacht owners to personalize interior spaces. Called Limited Editions, the series has so far included 171- and 212-footers. Now, at the request of an owner of a 171, the Dutch shipyard is introducing the Limited Editions Amels 177.
At 177 feet LOA (54.3 meters), the new model will have many of the same features as her smaller sister, including styling by Tim Heywood, a 30-foot (nine-meter) beam, and accommodations for 12 in the owner’s party. The differences came about after a client asked for extra space for a touch-and-go helicopter landing area, more room on the aft deck, a larger lazarette to stow watersports gear, and a “beach club” at the transom. The latter will be an indoor-outdoor area fitted with a steam bath, shower, day head, changing area, and entertainment center.
Amels decided to incorporate some changes of its own, too. For example, the transom door will be larger than the one aboard the 171 to ease the crew’s job of handling watertoys.
No launch date has been released for the first yacht in the new series, but judging from the shortened build schedules permitted by series construction, I’d anticipate sometime in 2011 or 2012, keeping in mind that available build slots will also impact it.
