Brownie’s Marine Group, whose diving systems are aboard many megayachts worldwide, just landed an exclusive worldwide license that gives it an even bigger edge over competitors. It will now make and sell Nitrox Generation Diving Systems for the yacht and shipbuilding markets.
Developed by Undersea Breathing Systems, Nitrox Systems has been offered by Brownie’s for some time, with the difference being that Brownie’s had to pay royalties. Now, owning the license means the company’s production costs are cut in half, according to Robert Carmichael, Brownie’s CEO. He says that this enables Brownie’s to broaden its marketing and sales efforts to reach more divers, novices and experienced enthusiasts alike. He also points out that the company offers the only nitrox system that works with Bauer Compressors’ tank-fill systems, which most divers prefer. Bauer Compressors was founded more than 60 years ago.
Brownie’s and Carmichael each have long histories in the dive business, too. Brownie’s was founded in 1969 in Fort Lauderdale by a gentleman named Mr. Brown, a.k.a. Brownie, who was an avid diver. Brownie began designing and manufacturing products that would enable him to dive for tropical fish as unimpeded as possible. His first employee was Carmichael, who took over the business in 1985 and broadened its scope to include tank-filling systems and custom support stations.
