When the inaugural Millennium Cup was held in 2000, the goal was to thank megayacht owners and crew who had visited Auckland and other New Zealand regions during the America’s Cup race just held in those waters. Another goal was to promote the region’s shipyards, refit facilities, and other marine businesses. As of 2012, the Millennium Cup is now an annual event, attracting motoryachts and sailing yachts from around the world.
In honor of the next Millennium Cup being held from February 15 to 18 and so far attracting a handful of top sailing yachts, here’s a look way back at its beginnings. These spectacular scenes are from the regatta’s second year.
