Picking up on the expedition-yacht trend is one thing. Tapping into a shipyard’s commercial roots is another. Tomahawk, ready for build at Columbus Yachts, does both.
Columbus Yachts, as we’ve mentioned before, is a division of the Palumbo Group, which constructs, converts, and repairs tankers, LNG carriers, and more. Since an explorer yacht should be truly capable of exploring, Columbus Yachts and its design partners set out to ensure that. Marco Casali lends the 168’3” (51.3-meter) Tomahawk a purposeful style, with a house-forward look and acres of deck space for toys and enjoyment. Even “Tomahawk” is a purposeful choice, evoking the shape of the bow. Overall, Casali wanted the megayacht to echo Palumbo Group’s shipbuilding experience. “Tomahawk is conceived as a yacht inside a ship, because of its comfort qualities,” he says.
The hull picks up the yacht-inside-a-ship concept. Columbus Yachts tapped Palumbo Group’s in-house team for naval architecture, along with the firm Insenaval. The latter has research-vessel experience and drew upon it, given that explorers can and do take on varying weather conditions. Tomahawk is meant to go from the coldest climes to the warmest ones with ease, too. The megayacht should see a 4,000-nautical-mile range at 12 knots, under MTU power. Cruising speed should be 14 knots.
Additionally key for the ABS-classed megayacht: abundant space for guests to relax or be active. The 33’6” (10.25-meter) beam plays a role, of course. So, too, does Tomahawk’s three-level-high “beach area.” Serving multiple purposes, as seen below, the beach area comprises about 2,153 square feet (200 square meters). Two 39-foot (12-meter) tenders live out on deck. Meanwhile, a personal sub, four PWCs, or even a handful of motorcycles, along with inflatables and other small toys, stay in the garage just below. Offload the toys on deck to unveil a pool, or a nearly regulation-size basketball court. No worries if you want more toys: Tomahawk has a bow garage, too.
Casali and Columbus Yachts are confident that the owner of Tomahawk will like the suggested location for the owners’ suite. It’s forward on the main deck. It benefits from a private sunning area with a hot tub, comprising 226 square feet (21 square meters). Equally appealing is the formal dining area, with a bar, for 10 people. If waterside activities are on order, guests can access the beach area directly from the lower-deck staterooms. A cinema/karaoke room, spa, gym, and good-size crew’s quarters are all specified, too.
Note also that Columbus Yachts and Casali have additional dimensions available for Tomahawk. They range from 131 feet to 328 feet (40 to 100 meters). Each has a complete engineering platform, too.
