To say Lang Walker enjoys the waterborne lifestyle is an understatement. For several decades, he’s developed waterside properties for business and enjoyed on-water activities for pleasure. In fact, he’s immensely enjoyed cruising aboard a few sailboats and sailing superyachts christened Kokomo. What better name, then, for a superyacht-friendly private island than Kokomo. And what better way to combine business and pleasure than to make Kokomo island a resort that welcomes cruising individuals, couples, and families alike.
Kokomo island is within Fiji’s Kadavu Group archipelago, south of Viti Levu. Picture untouched reefs, unspoiled beaches, and more. Unspoiled is a good description for Kokomo island, too. It captured Walker’s attention six years ago while cruising. He considers it “heaven on earth.” To keep it that way, Walker emphasized sustainability in development and operations. All meals, for example, feature locally sourced meats and fish as well as produce. Indeed, some produce comes straight from the island’s own gardens.
Since the Great Astrolabe Reef rims the island, Kokomo island can only accommodate certain superyachts. Walker and his team say yachts to about 197 feet (60 meters) should have no issue. Still, they recommend inquiring whether your beam and draft are amenable to the limitations. Regardless, superyachts are welcome to anchor outside and use tenders to access shore. Furthermore, if you’d rather fly in, Kokomo island provides a private seaplane (top) or helicopter. The trip is about 45 minutes from Nadi International Airport.
However you arrive, two packages should entice. The Anchor & Stay package includes accommodations on Kokomo island. These range from beachfront villas to hilltop residences. The two- to three-bedroom villas feature traditional Fijian design (above) and a private deck. The three- to six-bedroom hilltop residences provide terrific views. Both types of accommodations include private infinity pools (below). In addition, the package includes all meals and non-motorized watersports. You can further use the gym, indulge in the spa, play tennis, and scuba dive, too. Your kids will get a kick out of the Kaji Kids’ Club. Need a nanny? No problem: standard, as is a butler.
The Explore Kokomo package, meanwhile, is for those of you who wish to stay aboard your yacht. You still get to enjoy all the above amenities, except, of course, the accommodations. There is, though, a main pool and adjacent cabana with cocktails and meals.
Whatever you choose, take advantage of optional excursions, too. Dive the above-mentioned Great Astrolabe Reef. Take walks through the rainforest to discover waterfalls. Or tour Kokomo Farm with Kokomo island’s executive chef. Your superyacht chef can even select fresh herbs from the garden.
“Whether you have sailed the South Pacific or not, it’s a place you need to visit in your lifetime,” Walker avers.
